Ashtanga Yoga
Astanga yoga was developed by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in 1937. It's a demanding series of very physically challenging asanas taught in a strict, sequential order.
Ashtanga yoga consists of vinyasas, a specific sequence of certain asanas that flow directly into one another, producing heat in the body and releasing toxins. There are a total of six vinyanas in Ashtanga yoga. The first series focuses on forward bends. The second focuses on back bending asanas. The other four series are quite advanced.
Astanga yoga places great emphasis on strength, stamina and flexibility. Astanga yoga is designed for those students who enjoy fast paced, intense workouts. Quite often, men are drawn to Ashtanga yoga for those very reasons. |
